Biography
Mr. Skeen is a native of Hartford, Alabama and a graduate of Geneva County High School. While there, he participated in both the band and choir programs. As a member of the band program, Mr. Skeen was the percussion assistant section leader for two years and the percussion section leader for two years.
After graduation, Mr. Skeen attended Enterprise State Junior College in Enterprise, Alabama and participated in the award-winning show choir, the "Entertainers." While a member of the "Entertainers," he served as a choreographer and received a fine arts scholarship. Also during this time, Mr. Skeen served many area high schools as a percussion instructor.
Mr. Skeen transferred to Troy University in the Fall of 2002 to pursue a Bachelor of Music Education degree. Throughout his time there, Mr. Skeen was a part of many instrumental and vocal ensembles including the famous "Sound of the South" Marching Band, symphonic band, concert band, chamber winds, Jazz ensemble, percussion ensemble, pep band, collegiate singers, and chamber choir. As a member of the "Sound of the South" Marching Band, Mr. Skeen continued growing in leadership skills by becoming the Assistant Section Leader for the percussion section.
Mr. Skeen graduated from Troy University in May 2005 and began his teaching experience by becoming the Assistant Band Director at Russell County High School in Seale, Alabama. He served as the assistant for three years and became the Band Director in 2008. He saw the band program at Russell County grow and mature into a moral, hard-working, and highly competitive program - receiving numerous superior and "Best in Class" Awards.
In August of 2013, Mr. Skeen was awarded his Master of Education degree from Columbus State University in Columbus, Georgia. He has served for several years as a percussion judge for Alabama District VIII Solo and Ensemble and at the Dixieland Band Showcase in Brewton, Alabama. Mr. Skeen has also served for several years as a band judge for the Phenix Invitational Marching Festival in Phenix City, Alabama. He is affiliated with the Alabama Music Educators Association, the National Association for Music Educators, Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society, and Phi Boota Roota (National Drumline Fraternity). Mr. Skeen is also an educator for Salyers Percussion and a member of the Alabama Winds.
Mr. Skeen has been teaching at Prattville High School since 2015.
